From antagonistic conservation to biodiversity democracy in rewilding

چکیده

The importance of conservation is matched by its potential to provoke contention, especially for rewilding. Treating rural peoples as biodiversity “problems” has given way viewing them “solutions,” but most needed a turn toward democracy, resolving conflicts and balancing rural-urban interests despite knowledge value disagreements. According the 2019 Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity Ecosystem Services global assessment report, some 1 million species may be threatened with extinction. Many drivers loss, including alterations in land use overexploitation, have only accelerated last 50 years. After failing meeting 2020 Aichi Targets, Convention Biological Diversity been developing set goals action-oriented targets Post-2020.1Perino A. Pereira H.M. Felipe-Lucia M. Kim H. Kühl H.S. Rewilding is the new Pandora’s box in conservation

Rewilding--the proposed restoration of ecosystems through the (re-)introduction of species--is seen by many as a way to stem the loss of biodiversity and the functions and services that biodiversity provides to humanity. In addition, rewilding might lead to increased public engagement and enthusiasm for biodiversity. But what exactly is rewilding, and is it based on sound ecological understandi...

Perverse Market Outcomes from Biodiversity Conservation Interventions

Conservation interventions are being implemented at various spatial scales to reduce the impacts of rising global population and affluence on biodiversity and ecosystems. While the direct impacts of these conservation efforts are considered, the unintended consequences brought about by market feedback effects are often overlooked. Perverse market outcomes could result in reduced or even reverse...
